Questions

I've gotten a few questions I forgot to address about the book and figured I'd post them here so everyone can read the answers:

1. I thought in the beginning that the sales from this book were going to charity. Is this still the case?

That was originally what we were aiming to do, but then discovered that according to what charity you pick, the project (be it a book, fundraising event, newspaper, etc) had to be approved by said charity each step of the way. So for this first project we've decided not to be associated with any particular charity. That being decided, we've chosen to keep the cost of the book as low as possible, so neither Grace nor I are making a profit off the book. (I think I've actually *lost* money, lol I've had to order multiple proof copies!)

2. Might it be possible to purchase the book at cost if I wanted to bring copies to sell at events (and is that permitted)? Or is the existing price already at cost?

The book price is set at cost right now. What that means is the $22.10 you're paying is what it costs Lulu to create and print the book. No profit is being generated from it. Unfortunately since I can't give out free copies to each contributing artist, we wanted to keep the book as affordable as possible.

Yes! If you'd like to purchase multiple copies of MP to sell at events please do so! This will increase everyone's visibility as an artist and would just be awesome in general.  :)  And if you take photos of the event, please let me know and I'll post them on the blog for everyone to see.

Progress Update

Hi everyone - here is the latest update on the book: I ended up getting sick and then ran into some unexpected color issues with the proof copy. I am currently working with Lulu to straighten them out. Hopefully it shouldn't be too much longer, thank you for your patience!

Proof Copy GET

I'm excited to say I have JUST received the proof copy of MP in the mail today! Grace and I are going to go over the book together tomorrow (Saturday) afternoon, but I can already see that there will definitely need to be a couple changes implemented. (nothing too major - don't worry I didn't leave anyone's artwork out!)

I am extremely happy with the print and paper quality, though. It's very professional and I can't wait to show you guys!

Book Progress

I want to thank everyone for your patience, we're still working on getting Midnight Phantasmagory published. Assembling each artists' pages and doing the layout took longer than I anticipated - I was also having some technical issues with Lulu.com, but I believe everything is fixed now; I'm just combing over the book one last time to make sure there are no spelling mistakes, etc.

Proof Copy

Another short progress update on the book - I'm in the process of uploading all the pages to Lulu. I'm aiming to order a proof copy by July 31st because Lulu's running a special until then where the first book is free for new authors. Grace & I will use this copy as a last, final check to make sure everything is correct before we send out the link to the published book for everyone.

(Deanne & Kasey, I've checked over both your pages twice, but since I haven't heard anything from either of you I'm just going ahead and uploading them).

Preview Pages

Hey guys - I am still looking for "ok's" or revisions on your preview pages from:

Autumn H.
Deanne S.
Kasey G.
Nicholas L.
Savannah B.

Please let me know!

Preview Pages

Everyone's preview pages have been sent out as .PDF's by now. If you did NOT receive yours, please let me know and I'll get them out to you ASAP.

Once I get everyone's "ok" on their pages, then we can move ahead and actually start uploading the book to Lulu. (exciting, yay!) Right now our plan is to upload the book to Lulu, then Grace and I will be ordering 1 proof copy for ourselves. This is so we can review it in print, and address any last minute changes (color levels, spelling errors, etc) if need be before sending out the final link to everyone.

Layout Progress

I am starting to send out preview .PDF's to each artist of their bio page and following artwork. Please look over your pages and email me if I've misspelled anything, got your email/URL wrong or anything else like that. Don't worry about the lower image quality; these are small size PDF's for review, not the final high-quality files.

Ideally I'd like this book to go to print by the end of July, so if everyone can review their pages and get back to me in a timely manner it will help a lot. And if your page looks perfect, please send an email anyway with an "ok" so I can check you off.

Thank you everyone for your patience while we compile the book!

Book Layout & Missing Artwork

A big thank you to everyone who sent in their artwork, it's looking incredible!

The next step is for Grace and I to take all the pieces and design the layout of the book itself. There will be a table of contents and each artist will have their own bio page, followed by their artwork. We'll then email out preview pages to each artist for the final ok - to make sure everything is spelled correctly, your website URL is up to date, we have the correct titles on your work, etc. This will take us at least a few weeks, so please be patient! This is the first time I've put together a book like this so that's just my rough estimate. All the progress will be posted here to the blog so keep checking back!

That being said, I'm still missing work from a few people. (a couple of you have emailed or called me directly, so you're ok) I've listed below the people I haven't heard from regarding artwork, and the number of pieces they still need to send in. If your name is on this list, please email us and let us know where you're at with your illustrations ASAP.

Book Layout

Hey everyone, hope you're busy drawing/painting/sketching away!

I just wanted to make a quick post to say that if you've already finished with your piece (I know a couple of you already have!) there's no need to wait until the May 20th deadline to send it off. You can send it off anytime beforehand, it will actually help to speed up the process of compiling the book.

Right now I'm working on my own piece as well as the layout - can't wait to see what everyone comes up with!

Submission Guidelines

Midnight Phantasmagory Submission Guidelines

Artwork is now due May 20th (Friday) 2011.

EDIT: There have been some concerns about the May 1st deadline not being enough time, so we've pushed it back to May 20th, a little over a month and a half. If you guys still feel this isn't enough time, please let us know; I really don't want to go past 2 months for fear of losing momentum.

We will be using Lulu to print "Midnight Phantasmagory." The book will be perfect bound, paperback and in color. It will be comic book size at 6.625 x 10.25 in.

To download the page template for your artwork, please go to Lulu.com > Publish (top, left-hand tab) > Books (top left) > and then scroll down until you see "Book Specifications."

Find the comic book (about halfway down the list) and click "download zip file" under templates. Once unzipped you should have 2 folders and 1 ReadMe.pdf. Please use the "6.625x10.25_Front_EN" file to correctly format your artwork. Lulu provides a formatting FAQ here, as well.

In addition to these guidelines we will need your artwork to be at least 300DPI, in order to get a high-quality print.

Once you are finished with your artwork, please send it in one single email to: mp.artbook2010@gmail.com In your email list your name, number and title of each piece you are submitting and any notes on your work. It should  look something like this:

Rachael H-N.
1 - "Untitled Piece #1"
Medium
Brief Description
2 - "Untitled Piece #2"
Medium
Brief Description

This is just to help Grace and I keep everyone's work sorted out once they start coming in. Please keep the description brief, to 1 or 2 sentences. (description/medium are not required, only if you choose to-the one thing we do need is the title)

And if you have any questions, please feel free to post them here. Now - go draw!

FAQ

Hi everyone! I've been getting some questions lately about the book/artwork. This post will be the beginning of a FAQ, so please check here if you have questions. And if they're not answered, you can either email me or Grace  at mp.artbook2010@gmail.com or simply post here on the blog.

1. Does my artwork need to be in a certain style?
No. As long as your piece represents "horror" to you, then anything is fine. We want this interpretation to be completely up to the artist. That being said, we are looking for finished pieces, not sketches or doodles.

2. What size do my pieces need to be?
The short answer is 6.625 x 10.25 in. The long answer is here.

3. When is my piece due?
May 20th, (Friday) 2011

4. Will I get a free copy of the book if I'm a contributing artist?
No. Unfortunately since this is a very small print run, Grace or I have no way to get freebie copies. We'll be buying our own copies, too.

5. If I want to make prints of the artwork I've submitted, will I be able to?
Yes! You retain all rights to your artwork. We do ask though that you do not exhibit (online or elsewhere) the pieces you've created specifically for "Midnight Phantasmagory" until after the book is published. Once the book goes "live" you are free to showcase your piece(s) anywhere.

6. Can I submit photography?
No. We are looking for illustrations/drawings/paintings and the like. If you have a photomanipulation, or are not sure if your piece would qualify, please email Grace and I directly: mp.artbook2010@gmail.com

7. Can I include a brief note about my piece and the medium used along with the title?
We specifically want the title of your piece first, and if you can keep to 1 or 2 sentences, a brief description along with the medium.

8. How many pieces are required?
Each artist needs to be able to commit to at least 2 pieces, and no more than 5.

Call to Artists

Artists call for Midnight Phantasmagory is now open!

Our theme is horror stories; anything you consider horrific and terrifying is fair game for the theme. Maybe it’s a classic horror poem such as Poe’s “The Raven,” or perhaps it’s a dream you woke up from screaming in the middle of the night as a child?

If you are an illustrator interested in having your work in the book, please send an email to: mp.artbook2010@gmail.com with the following information:

First & last name
Email
Website or blog (if you have one)
# of pieces
Short bio about yourself (we will be printing a short blurb about each artist before their work, this can be your artist’s statement, notes about how you work, etc)

We need at least 20 artists committing to a minimum of 2 pieces each to make this art book a go.

Please be able to commit to at least 2 (& no more than 5) fully finished pieces. They can be black/white or color, but we are looking for new finished artwork that hasn’t been shown or reproduced elsewhere; no sketches or doodles. Grace and I will both be posting a couple of new pieces to give everyone a feel for what we're looking for.

Call to artists closes 3/31/2011. At that time we will post all the details regarding artwork - such as size, dpi, deadline, etc.

If you have any questions, please comment here.

Welcome!

"One need not be a chamber to be haunted, one need not be a house, the brain has corridors surpassing Material place."

- Emily Dickinson

Hello & welcome to the home of Midnight Phantasmagory! Midnight Phantasmagory is a horror-story themed artbook assembled by me (Rachael Herb-Neterer) & Grace Freeman. We both have so many talented, artistic friends who may not have had the chance to exhibit their artwork in a printed & bound format. Our aim is to create a physical artbook so they (and us!) can do just that. I know that there have been multiple articles and discussions recently about books and print in general declining, and while this may be true for news outlets, I firmly believe that nothing can take the place of an actual, physical novel or artbook in your hands.

The book will either be sold at base price (the cost covering just printing/binding/shipping/etc) or we may make a slight profit off the cover price and then donate the money to a charity; that will be determined at a later date when it goes to print.

Please look for the official “call to artists” soon!

- Rachael
